The Story Behind Stop Adding Sauce

In Jamaican culture, sauce matters.

Too little? Something feels missing.

Too much? You overpower the entire dish.

For author, entrepreneur, and emotional wellness coach MK Colbert, that simple idea became a powerful metaphor for life, especially when it comes to emotions, relationships, assumptions, and the stories we tell ourselves.

Her upcoming book, Stop Adding Sauce, Why We Create Stories, Believe Them and Suffer Because of Them, is scheduled for release in Summer 2026, explores what happens when fear, heartbreak, insecurity, and past pain quietly begin influencing how we interpret everyday situations.

“Sometimes we add extra meaning to things that may not even be there,” MK explains. “We replay conversations, assume the worst, question people’s intentions, or create emotional stories in our heads that leave us stressed and exhausted.”

For MK, the connection between emotional healing and Jamaican culture runs deeper than music. It lives in rhythm, storytelling, movement, and survival.

“Growing up with Jamaican roots, music was never just background noise,” MK explains. “Dancehall, reggae, lovers rock, they carry emotion. They tell stories about heartbreak, strength, confidence, survival, and healing. Sometimes the music says the things we don’t know how to say ourselves.”

Like poetry, music became a mirror.

A way to process emotions.

A way to feel seen.

“Sometimes we cry through songs. Sometimes we rebuild through them. Sometimes we dance through pain before we even realize we’re healing,” MK says. “Culture teaches us resilience. Music gives language to emotions we may struggle to explain.”

That understanding deeply influenced Stop Adding Sauce, a book about recognizing the emotional stories we create, learning self-awareness, and finding healthier ways to respond to life.

But MK also noticed something deeper.

Sometimes our minds become DJs too.

We remix situations.

Replay moments.

Add meanings.

Turn a simple misunderstanding into a full emotional movie.

The book explores emotional regulation, overthinking, relationship anxiety, self-worth, and the hidden ways people unintentionally create more suffering for themselves through assumptions and fear.

But MK is clear:

“This book is not about blaming people or suppressing emotions. But sometimes we have to pause and ask ourselves, am I responding to reality, or to the sauce I added?”

Brief Book Summary

Stop Adding Sauce: Why We Create Stories, Believe Them, and Suffer Because of Them is a relatable and eye-opening book about the emotional stories we create when fear, overthinking, and assumptions take over. From unanswered texts to misunderstood tones, the book explores how quickly we can turn small moments into painful narratives. With humor, honesty, and practical wellness tools, readers learn how to pause, check the facts, and ask: Is this reality, or did I just add sauce?

What Inspired This Book?

The inspiration came from both personal experiences and professional observations.

As a social worker and emotional wellness coach, MK noticed how often people mentally exhaust themselves replaying conversations, assuming intentions, spiraling into worry, or creating emotional suffering through overanalysis.  The phrase “stop adding sauce” became a relatable, memorable metaphor for learning emotional awareness and regulation.

What Message Does MK Want Readers to Take Away?

Peace does not always come from having all the answers. Sometimes, it begins when we stop adding fear, assumptions, and overthinking to situations that are already hard enough.

The goal of Stop Adding Sauce is not perfection. It is awareness.

To pause before spiraling. To check the story before believing it.To respond to life with more clarity, self-compassion, and emotional wisdom.

At its heart, the message is simple:

Sometimes the situation is painful enough without us adding extra sauce.

Who Is This Book For?

Stop Adding Sauce is for the overthinkers, the emotionally exhausted, and the people who are tired of carrying stories their heart never asked for.

It is for anyone navigating anxiety, self-doubt, emotional overwhelm, relationship stress, or the quiet habit of turning one moment into an entire story.

It is also for people who have learned to stay on alert, read between every line, prepare for disappointment, or control the narrative because uncertainty has not always felt safe.

In short, this book is for anyone who has ever asked:

“Am I reacting to what really happened, or to what my mind created?”

Why Should People Read Stop Adding Sauce?

Because sometimes we are not just reacting to life. We are reacting to the extra meaning we added to it.

Stop Adding Sauce helps readers recognize when fear, insecurity, past experiences, nervous system responses, and emotional overwhelm are shaping the story before the full truth has had a chance to speak.

With humor, honesty, reflection, and practical tools like the Sauce Check™ Method, the book invites readers to slow down, check the facts, and become curious about what is really happening underneath the reaction.

It is not about ignoring emotions.

It is about learning how to stop drowning in stories that were never the full truth.

And for many readers, it may reveal something deeper:

Sometimes the sauce is not drama.

Sometimes it is fear.Sometimes it is protection.Sometimes it is the nervous system trying to feel safe. And sometimes, healing begins when we stop asking, “What is wrong with me?” and start asking, “What is this reaction trying to show me?”
