Dancehall beatboxer, Mixing Lab, who is known for replicating some of the most recognizable international and local rhythms in Dancehall circuits, has an impressive talent. JamWeekly Magazine had the opportunity for an exclusive interview with the Reggae/Dancehall star.
When asked what inspired him to become a beatboxer, he explained that one day he woke up and started making sounds with his mouth. People around him heard his talent and encouraged him to pursue the art of beatboxing. Realizing he had a natural gift that flowed effortlessly, he decided to create beats using only his mouth.
When questioned about the instruments or equipment he uses to make rhythms, he humorously replied, "My mouth!" and jokingly referred to himself as a "human beatbox”.
Regarding his feelings about making music, Mixing Lab expressed that he feels great and liberated. When asked how he deals with writer's block, he shared that he takes a break for a few days, sometimes up to four, and then returns to his work, taking the time to perfect it. During the impromptu interview, Mixing Lab didn't want it to end and playfully requested more than the initially planned five questions.
Mixing Lab requested that we ask four more questions, so when asked by a staff of the JamWeekly who are some of the artists he has worked with in the music industry, whether it’s producing for them or simply sharing the stage while he accompanied them during their performances, he answered, “there is a whole heap of dem that I have worked with" and began listing a wide array of artists including Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, I-Octane, Sizzla Kalonji, Macka Diamond, Pamputtae, D'Angel, Tarrus Riley, Khago and Konshens, among others. However, he forgot to mention his biggest hit song, "Skip To My Lou", until reminded by JamWeekly, which led to laughter in the room. “Skip To My Lou” is a 2009 hit track by the Dancehall duo RDX.
Amidst the jovial atmosphere, Mixing Lab revealed a secret known to no one in the industry, not even by any media outlet. When asked if we at JamWeekly can know it, he agreed to share that he's been working on a project called "Beat Box Machine", set to be released on his birthday.
The sounds of his laughter provided feel good vibes during the interview. It was an entertaining and great interview with the Human Beatboxer, Mixing Lab.
