Skippa Makes His Mark in Toronto

SANDZ is a popular event series with festivals in New York and Jamaica, as well as Toronto, Florida and England. Previous events have featured Jamaican artists such as Masicka, Govana and Jada Kingdom, as well as major American artists like Rick Ross and DaBaby. In 2024, Toronto artist Pressa also performed at the SANDZ Festival, showing how closely connected the organizers are to the city.

Skippa made his presence felt in Toronto this summer not only by performing at the 2026 SANDZ event, but also by filming a music video while he was in the city. The video for “Detox” was filmed in Toronto and quickly released in the middle of his ongoing beef with Malie Donn.

The video features the Canadian city and landmarks such as the CN Tower, while the song includes several diss lines aimed at Malie Donn.

At one point in the song, Skippa insinuates that Malie Donn makes repetitive music and that his songs all sound the same. Some fans have found the diss amusing, pointing out that some of Skippa’s own music has also been criticized for sounding similar, with some beats sounding almost identical across different songs.

Skippa also makes more serious accusations about Malie Donn involving a sexual assault case. According to Barbados police, Malie Donn was cleared following an investigation. The accusations in the song should therefore be understood as part of the ongoing musical beef and not as established fact.

Regardless of the beef with Malie Donn, it has made for some great music and an interesting summer, including some memorable moments that Toronto can look back on and feel like it played a part in the action.
