TAMO J TALKS ‘WASABI,’ INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS AND TAKING REGGAE TO THE WORLD

An Exclusive Interview with Jamweekly Magazine
Jamaican reggae and dancehall artiste Tamo J is turning up the heat with his latest single, “Wasabi,” produced by Track Starr. In an exclusive interview with Jamweekly Magazine, the Luton-born, Kingston-raised artiste opens up about the inspiration behind his latest release, his musical journey, international achievements and the vision driving him forward.
The title “Wasabi” perfectly matches the energy Tamo J brings to his music and image sharp, bold and designed to leave an impression. His personal motto, “Quality in the music. Identity in the image,” continues to guide his creative direction as he expands his presence across international markets.
FROM LUTON TO KINGSTON
Born in Luton, UK, and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Tamo J began his musical journey more than a decade ago. His development was shaped in part by the mentorship of veteran producer and songwriter Michael “Mike” Bennett, who played an important role during his early years.
Tamo J first gained attention with the breakout track “Life’s Too Short,” before continuing to build his catalogue with songs including “Victory,” “Deliver Me,” “Level Up,” “Elevate” and “Bliss.”
During his career, he has also demonstrated his strength as a songwriter, contributing to music associated with names such as Sean Paul, Kranium, Singer J and Denyque. His performance résumé includes sharing the stage with dancehall icon Beenie Man, further establishing his credibility within the Jamaican music industry.
MORE THAN AN ARTIST
Tamo J is not only a singer and performer. He is also a songwriter and self-producer who has taken an active role in shaping his own sound and career.
His self-produced track “Real Talk” placed third in the 2021 JCDC Festival Song Competition and was also considered for Grammy recognition.
That independent approach has helped Tamo J develop a career that extends beyond Jamaica. According to his EPK, his music has accumulated approximately 4.44 million streams, 2.99 million video views and 147,000 followers, alongside significant playlist, Shazam and radio activity.
His catalogue has also generated 114 chart entries, with his music reaching listeners throughout the Caribbean, United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Europe.

BUILDING A GLOBAL FOOTPRINT
One of the strongest indicators of Tamo J’s growing international presence has been his chart performance.
His single “Victory” reached No. 1 on the reggae chart in the Bahamas while also reaching No. 8 on the country’s overall music chart.
Switzerland has also proven to be an important market for the artiste, with four of his songs entering the reggae Top 10. “Your Love” reached No. 4, “Lose Control” No. 6, “Believe” No. 7 and “Bliss” No. 8.
The “Sugar Dumpling Riddim” project also demonstrated Tamo J’s ability to connect with European reggae audiences, reaching No. 2 on Belgium’s reggae albums chart and No. 5 in Germany, while also charting in Finland and the UK.
“Your Love” extended that international reach even further, charting in Germany, the UK, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Argentina, while earning placement on Apple Music’s Crucial Roots reggae playlist.
His music has also charted in countries including Norway, Zambia, Ghana and Kosovo.
‘WASABI’ BRINGS A NEW FLAVOUR
With “Wasabi,” Tamo J is continuing to build on that international momentum.
Produced by Track Starr, the single delivers another opportunity for the artiste to showcase his distinctive approach while introducing his music to new audiences.
For Tamo J, the journey is about more than simply releasing songs. It is about developing a recognizable identity and creating music capable of travelling beyond Jamaica.
His international visibility has also expanded into major digital spaces. Tamo J recently performed on a stream alongside dancehall superstar Sean Paul and popular streamer n3on, giving him another opportunity to connect with a wider global audience.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR TAMO J?
As “Wasabi” continues its run, Tamo J remains focused on expanding his international reach while strengthening his position as one of reggae and dancehall’s distinctive modern voices.
From being born in Luton and raised in Kingston to charting across Europe and the Caribbean, working as a songwriter, producer and performer, and connecting with audiences in multiple territories, his journey reflects a determination to build a career without borders.
For Tamo J, the message remains simple: quality in the music, identity in the image and a sound built for the world.
