Reunion Island’s reggae pioneers celebrate 35 years of music, culture and authenticity

Kom Zot, a reggae band from Réunion Island, is celebrating 35 years in music in 2026, marking a major milestone for a group widely recognized as one of the pioneers of “Reggae Made in Reunion.” Originating from Le Chaudron, a well-known district with a reputation for its tough environment, the band channels the area’s intensity, energy and spirit into its distinctive musical identity.

Founded in 1991, Kom Zot has built its reputation through a sound that blends reggae with the cultural influences of Réunion Island. While the group primarily performs in Réunion Creole, its music embraces diverse linguistic and cultural elements, creating an authentic sound rooted in the island’s heritage.

The band’s journey began when founder Luciano Mabrouck sought to revive his former electric maloya group, Koman Na Fé. To bring his vision to life, he enlisted Michel Andamaye and Pascal Gaps. Guy-Noël Alexis, who had been part of the original musical venture, later joined the lineup, helping establish the foundation of Kom Zot.

Over the decades, Kom Zot has continued to represent Réunion Island’s vibrant music scene, sharing stages with internationally acclaimed reggae artists and groups, including Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Gladiators, Israel Vibration and Lucky Dube. These performances have further strengthened the band’s place within the wider reggae community.

In 2026, Kom Zot is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a special tour titled “Kom Zot 35,” commemorating more than three decades of dedication to music and cultural expression.

The group has also completed recording sessions for its ninth and tenth albums, marking another significant chapter in its musical journey. The band is continuing its studio work as it prepares new material for release. The project includes plans for a 33⅓ RPM vinyl edition, with the original release schedule mentioning March 2026 and late December 2026. Further details regarding the albums and their release dates are anticipated.

As Kom Zot celebrates this important anniversary, the band remains committed to preserving its musical roots while continuing to evolve. With 35 years of experience, international performances and new projects on the horizon, Kom Zot stands as a testament to the enduring connection between reggae music, cultural identity and the people of Réunion Island.
