Tay’Ja Reign: The British-Jamaican Songwriter Using AI to Take Dancehall in a New Direction

Most artists use AI to write songs, british-Jamaican songwriter Kiesha uses AI for something entirely different.

Rather than making herself the public face of her music, she created Tay’Ja Reign, an AI-powered Dancehall artist through whom she presents the songs she writes, sings and performs. It’s an approach that is turning heads, challenging perceptions of artificial intelligence in music, and quietly building an international audience.

While AI continues to divide opinion across the music industry, Kiesha sees it differently.

“People think AI is writing my songs. It isn’t. Every lyric, every concept and every melody starts with me.”

Growing up with strong Jamaican roots in the UK, Kiesha was surrounded by the sounds of classic Dancehall and Reggae. The music of the 1990s, an era dominated by legendary producers, unforgettable riddims and lyrical storytelling, became the soundtrack that shaped her songwriting.

Instead of chasing short-lived trends, she set out to create music with the same humour, authenticity and personality that made Dancehall resonate around the world.

That vision became Tay’Ja Reign.

The project combines authentic, human-written songwriting with modern technology, creating an artist capable of releasing music consistently while allowing Kiesha to focus on what she enjoys most: writing songs.

“I’ve never been interested in becoming famous for the sake of it. I’ve always cared more about making great music. Tay’Ja Reign lets the songs be the focus.”

The Human Behind the AI: Why Tay’Ja Reign Sounds So Real

What makes Tay’Ja Reign particularly interesting is that, despite being an AI-powered artist, the performances behind her music are rooted in genuine human artistry.

Unlike many AI music projects, where a user simply enters a text prompt and allows technology to generate an entire song, Kiesha takes a more hands-on approach.

Not only does she write the lyrics, she also physically sings and performs the songs herself before using AI voice-conversion technology to transform her vocals into Tay’Ja Reign’s distinctive sound.

Rather than replacing the human performance, the technology acts as a digital vocal filter, changing the tone and character of her voice while retaining the elements that make a performance feel natural: breathing, phrasing, timing, emotion, vocal inflections and the unmistakable rhythm of Jamaican Patois.

This human foundation is particularly important in Dancehall, a genre where delivery, personality, cultural expression and rhythmic precision are just as important as the lyrics themselves.

Growing up surrounded by Jamaican music and culture, Kiesha brings an understanding of the language, humour, storytelling and vocal delivery that cannot simply be replicated by typing instructions into a music generator.

The result is a virtual artist whose performances carry the nuances and imperfections of a real human voice, challenging the assumption that AI-generated music must sound artificial or emotionally disconnected.

The Real Performance Behind the Virtual Artist

The same approach extends beyond the music and into Tay’Ja Reign’s visual identity.

Although audiences see a digital character on screen, many of the movements and performances originate from Kiesha herself.

Using motion-transfer and AI video technology, Kiesha can film herself dancing, performing and delivering lyrics before transferring those movements onto Tay’Ja Reign’s digital character.

This allows the finished visuals to retain natural body movement, timing, gestures and physical expression, rather than relying entirely on computer-generated animation.

Kiesha also takes responsibility for the creative direction of the music videos, overseeing everything from styling and locations to choreography, character consistency and the final edit.

The combination of human-written music, human-led vocal performances and real physical movement gives Tay’Ja Reign something that is often missing from fully automated AI projects: a recognisable human identity behind the technology.

For Kiesha, the distinction is simple. AI is not the artist replacing her creativity; it is the technology allowing her to present that creativity through a character she has built.

As she has previously explained, “I am Tay’Ja and Tay’Ja is me.”

Music Rooted in Dancehall Tradition

The catalogue reflects that philosophy.

Songs including Jamaican Man, NO GIMMICK, Leave Di Woman Dem Alone, One of One, Touch Button and Mango Seed blend classic Dancehall influences with a modern sound, touching on relationships, humour, everyday life and female confidence.

Kiesha has also secured official clearance from legendary Jamaican production duo Steely & Clevie to reinterpret elements of their iconic catalogue, allowing Tay’Ja Reign to celebrate classic Dancehall while respecting the legacy and rights of the original creators.

A Growing International Audience

The response has been remarkable.

Tay’Ja Reign has now surpassed one million streams across music platforms, marking a significant milestone for an independent AI-powered Dancehall artist.

Her music has also charted over 36 times, demonstrating her growing presence in the international Reggae and Dancehall scene.

Across social media, Tay’Ja Reign’s songs and creative projects have attracted more than 10 million views, while fans have created over 30,000 user-generated videos using her music, helping introduce her sound to audiences around the world.

What began as an independent creative experiment is steadily developing into an internationally recognised virtual music project, reaching Dancehall and Reggae audiences across Jamaica, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and beyond.

For Kiesha, however, success isn’t measured only by numbers.

“I want people to smile when they hear my songs. Whether they’re driving, cleaning the house, getting ready to go out or having a laugh with friends, I want the music to make people feel good. That’s always been the goal.”

The project is also proving that embracing new technology doesn’t have to mean abandoning tradition.

Many of Tay’Ja Reign’s records pay homage to the foundations of Dancehall, drawing inspiration from the sounds, humour and storytelling that made the genre one of Jamaica’s greatest cultural exports, while presenting them in a way that feels fresh for today’s audience.

As conversations continue around AI’s place in music, Kiesha believes technology should enhance creativity, not replace it.

“AI is just another tool. Just like a microphone, a camera or music software. The ideas still have to come from somewhere, and that’s where the songwriter matters.”

With new releases arriving regularly and a rapidly growing international audience, Tay’Ja Reign is becoming a distinctive new voice in modern Dancehall because the human creative process remains central to the music.

For Kiesha, that’s always been the point.

“Dancehall has given the world so much incredible music over the years. If I can help introduce that sound to a new generation while respecting the culture it came from, then I’ve achieved what I set out to do.”

The technology may be new, but the heart of the music remains the same: authentic Dancehall songwriting, rooted in Jamaican culture and driven by genuine human creativity.

What’s Next: An Official Van Cleef Remix

As Tay’Ja Reign continues to expand her catalogue and attract an international audience, Kiesha is taking another significant step in her musical journey with an upcoming official remix of Van Cleef, a standout record in the modern Dancehall scene.

The original production comes from Mr Salkey and Attomatic Records, the producers behind the recognised Dancehall record.

Kiesha has successfully secured clearance to create her own official remix, including the use of the original riddim, allowing her to reinterpret the track while respecting the work and rights of its creators.

The upcoming release will bring Tay’Ja Reign’s distinctive lyrical personality, Jamaican delivery and musical identity to an already established production, demonstrating her ability to work with recognised Dancehall material while introducing her own creative perspective.

The project also represents an important development for an independent AI-powered artist. By securing the necessary permissions and working with established productions, Kiesha is demonstrating that AI-assisted artistry can operate within the professional music industry rather than outside it.

Scheduled for release on 16 October 2026, Van Cleef Remix is one of several projects Kiesha is developing while simultaneously working towards Tay’Ja Reign’s forthcoming EP.

Rather than disappearing between major releases, she continues to experiment with different sounds, release new material and revisit the musical influences that inspired her to begin writing in the first place.

For Kiesha, the excitement lies in the creative freedom the project provides: the ability to write, sing, perform and develop a musical catalogue without having to become the public-facing artist herself.

As Tay’Ja Reign’s audience continues to grow, the project offers an alternative perspective on the future of AI in music.

Behind the digital face and AI-assisted voice is a real Jamaican songwriter whose words, musical instincts, vocal performances and creative direction shape everything audiences hear and see.

The technology may create the character, but it is Kiesha who brings Tay’Ja Reign to life.
